A car wash removes the dirt that landed on your car recently. A detail deals with what is bonded into the paint, embedded in the cabin and hiding in the parts a wash never reaches. They are different jobs at different prices and they are not interchangeable, however often the words get swapped.

What A Normal Car Wash Does
It gets the loose dirt off. Done well, by hand, that is genuinely valuable and it is what most cars need most of the time. Done badly, in an automatic brush wash, it also puts a fresh set of swirl marks into the paint every single visit.
What A Detail Adds
- Proper wheel, tyre, arch, grille and badge cleaning
- Removal of iron contamination, tar and bonded deposits
- Paint inspection and preparation
- Exterior finished and dressed rather than just dried
- Glass, trim and door shuts done properly
- A full interior clean down, including vents and seams
Does Detailing Remove Scratches And Stains
Some, honestly, and not all. Light swirls and haze can be improved with machine work where the paint allows it. Deep scratches that have gone through the clear coat are damage rather than dirt. Interior staining depends entirely on what it is and how long it has been there. Anyone promising every stain and every scratch will disappear has not seen the car.
When A Wash Is Enough
When the car was detailed reasonably recently, the paint still feels smooth after washing, and the interior responds to a vacuum and a wipe. That is most weeks for most cars, and there is no reason to spend more.
When It Is Not
- Clean paint that still feels rough
- Tar or iron deposits left after a normal wash
- Water no longer beading on properly cleaned panels
- A cabin with embedded grime, pet hair, spills or a smell
- Getting the car ready to sell, return or protect
- Wanting the paint assessed before a coating
