Step One, Understand The Car And What You Want

What the owner is unhappy about matters as much as what the paint looks like. Someone who wants easier washing needs a different conversation to someone who wants the swirls out of a black car. Getting that wrong is how people end up paying for work that was never going to fix their problem.

Step Two, Inspect The Condition

Paint gets looked at in proper light, which is where the things you cannot see in a driveway show up. Common findings on a car that has never been detailed include:

• Wash marks and swirls, usually from automatic washes
• Water spots and bonded contamination
• Transport film residue on newer cars
• Chips, scratches and previous repairs
• Trim, glass and wheels needing their own products

Step Three, A Safe Wash

Step Four, Remove Bonded Contamination

Washing does not remove everything. Tar, iron fallout and bonded deposits need chemical and sometimes mechanical decontamination. Run a hand over the paint after a wash and if it feels rough, this step has not been done. Coating over that surface locks the roughness in.

Step Five, Decide Whether Correction Is Needed

This is a judgement call, not a default. Three honest answers exist:

• Clean and prepare only, where the paint is in good shape
• A single stage enhancement, for a real gloss lift and lighter defects
• More involved correction, where the paint allows it and the owner wants the defects gone

Machine polishing removes a small amount of clear coat every time. Doing it because it is in the package rather than because the car needs it is not thorough, it is wasteful.

Step Six, Refine And Clean The Surface

Polishing oils and residue have to come off completely or the coating bonds to them instead of to the paint. This final wipe down is unglamorous and it is where a lot of coating failures actually start.

Temperature, humidity, dust and light all affect how a coating goes on and how it cures. This is the step people assume a mobile service cannot do properly, and it is the reason most mobile coating has a poor reputation.
